Myth #1: Use screensavers to save power. It would be nice if the “saver” part referred to energy savings: you could look at photos of mountain vistas or cute kittens and feel good about the habitats and animals you’re helping out. Sadly, screensavers were designed to extend the life of monochrome CRT monitors. No one uses those any more, and no one should use screensavers.

Screensavers can actually boost electricity use by preventing computers from entering energy-saving sleep modes. Plus, active monitors generate more heat, making air conditioners work harder. Get rid of your screensavers, no matter how cute the kittens are.

Myth #2: Devices that are turned off don’t use power. Many devices sip power even when they’re not really on. TVs, for example, are always watching for you to click the remote and so constantly draw some electricity. This standby power, also called vampire power or phantom load, is used by any device with a clock, timer or touchpad. And chargers draw power even when their phones or computers aren’t connected to them. According to Natural Resources Canada, standby power accounts for five to 10 per cent of all electricity used in Canadian homes.

At the office or home office, plug all your equipment (PCs, monitors, speakers, scanners and printers) into a power bar and flick the bar’s switch when you’re not working.

Myth #3: Switching off computers is bad for them. It’s a persistent myth that repeated on/off cycles damage computers. However, a study at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory concluded hard drives, for example, are not harmed by frequent shutdowns, and a sustainability paper from the University of British Columbia found computer components are actually harmed most by the heat stress created when a PC is on. The only component worn out by on/off cycles is the actual power switch and “they are typically rated for 40,000 on/off cycles. Over a 10 year period, you would have to turn your computer on and off 11 times a day, 365 days per year to hit 40,000.”

If you’re not using your computer, turn it off.

Myth #4: If I’m not actually working on it, my PC doesn’t use much power. Not true either. According to the Harvard Green Campus Initiative, whether idling or crunching big spreadsheet numbers, computers use about 45 watts for the CPU and 80 watts for a CRT monitor.

Enabling the energy-saving features on newer PCs, however, drops consumption to about 15 watts total.

Myth #5: My one little computer can’t be that big a deal. Also from Harvard comes this eye-opening number: one desktop computer left on all day is responsible for more than 1,500 pounds of atmospheric CO2 over a year.

All of which means, as a minimum, turn off office PCs and peripherals when they’re not in use, and get rid of screensavers. To save even more electricity, slay those vampires with power bars. A power bar at every workstation may cost some money up-front but that investment will come back as long-term savings and the positive feeling that you’ve actually done some good.

According to the Indian space agency, India's first mission to the moon is to be launched sometime around October 22-26, 2008 from the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It will be lofted up using the Indian Space Research Organization' s (ISRO) workhorse rocket the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the mission is likely to cost Rupees 386 crores. Chandrayaan- I is an unmanned scientific mission designed to map the resources of the moon and would undertake the most intense search for water on the moon surface.

Dr Alex said that the main objective of this mission was to understand the origin of the moon.
Apart from conducting tests on the surface of the moon, the mission also intends to conduct tests on the poles of the moon. Scientists are planning to land a rover on the moon to carry out chemical analysis of the lunar surface.

Chandrayan, which is being launched at a total cost of Rs 386 crore, is also scheduled to carry 11 payloads, which would include those from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Sweden, Japan, Germany and Bulgaria.
Dr Alex further pointed out that the technology used for the Chandrayan mission is ten times better than other countries. Moreover, ISRO excels in remote sensing and imaging and hence the moon can be photographed from a close range of five metres from the ground.

The mission aims to cover the entire moon and gather as much information as possible.
Currently, Chandrayan is going through crucial tests in Bengaluru. It still has to undergo the vibration and acoustic tests.

The spacecraft will be subject to heavy vibration first and then the sound of four jet planes will be put together to check its endurance.

However, Chandrayan will not land on the moon due to technical difficulties. The spacecraft would hover around the moon, said the ISRO team working on the moon mission.
Chandrayan could provide important leads on the possibility of human habitation on the moon, said Dr Anna Durai.

ISRO recently established a 32-meter diameter antenna at Byalalu near Bengaluru to provide tracking and command support for Chandrayaan- I.

The antenna and associated systems are the first steps in building the Indian Deep Space Network, which is vital for facilitating a two-way radio communication link between the spacecraft and the earth.

Optimists and devotees of science must, along with pessimists dreading – or eagerly anticipating – the destruction of the universe, wait a bit longer. The 'Big Bang' experiment involving the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been postponed to spring 2009.

According to a September 20 2008 statement on the LHC website, "during commissioning (without beam) of the final LHC sector (sector 3-4) at high current for operation at 5 TeV, an incident occurred at mid-day on Friday 19 September resulting in a large helium leak into the tunnel".

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the most likely cause of the problem was a faulty electrical connection between two magnets, which probably melted at high current leading to mechanical failure. CERN 's strict safety regulations ensured that at no time was there any risk to people," the statement said.

A full investigation was underway, but it was already clear that the sector would have to be warmed up for repairs to take place, it said.

"This implies a minimum of two months down time for LHC operation. For the same fault, not uncommon in a normally conducting machine, the repair time would be a matter of days."

Further details would be made available as soon as they were known, the statement said.

News agency reports quoted the Director-General of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Robert Aymar as saying that the incident was a psychological blow after a successful start of the LHC following years of painstaking preparation by teams of scientists.

"I have no doubt that we will overcome this setback with the same degree of rigor and application," Aymar said in a statement.

CERN spokesperson James Gillies said they would have to wait several weeks before the temperature could be raised from near absolute zero so that they could go inside the equipment to examine the extent of the damage.

"They're going to have to open up and really investigate what went on there," Gillies said. "So that's going to be two or three weeks before we can put out something that we're sure of."

"The winter shutdown will go according to schedule, which means that we start up the accelerator complex in the spring months."

Scientists involved in the experiment in Geneva were were trying to test the Big Bang idea by using the LHC to smash two beams of particles head-on at super-fast speeds, to see what would happen.

As The Sofia Echo's science correspondent explained the experiment on September 12, the basics behind the LHC are simple to explain and do not differ much from other particle accelerators. The particle accelerator, also called an atom smasher, is a long tube in which magnets direct and accelerate tiny particles to very high speeds.

When the required energy is achieved, those particles are collided inside a special piece of equipment, called a detector. Scientist use this data to make conclusions about the structure of the examined particles. The particle accelerator is the most important tool in the modern particle physics toolbox and there are a number of such devices built in laboratories around the world. CERN's is now the largest.

What is impressive about the LHC, in addition to its sheer size and power, is its component parts. The accelerator itself consists of a 27km-long circular tunnel, built 100m underground, in which are installed the lines and equipment needed for experiments.

What the LHC will do is accelerate protons, one of the two main components of the atomic nuclei, into two beams that circulate the accelerator until they nearly attain light speed.

At this point, each of the protons travels through the entire 27km line 11 000 times a second.

One of the most powerful superconductor magnets helps focus and confine the two beams. The entire installation has liquid helium (-271 degrees Celsius) circulating inside for cooling purposes.

Then the two beams are collided inside one of the four detectors built around the line, which can distinguish and plot the trajectories of the particles released from the collision. What will happen from there is a mystery for now.

Some suggest that this will generate an Earth-destroying black hole, though that is clearly not the goal of the project. Instead, scientists want to simulate the conditions of the Big Bang – the point at which our universe was thought to be created.

When this is done, the detectors will provide scientists with data that can answer important questions about the nature of the universe. And one of the answers they are eager to get is: Does the Higgs boson exist?

The Higgs boson is a theoretical, at this point, particle responsible for the transition between energy and matter. It is so important for our modern perception of the universe that it has even been christened with a divine nickname – the God particle. If the experiments at the LHC prove its existence, it would be the first experimental evidence ever and scientists would know how the energy from the Big Bang formed matter, and us.

New Air Ticket

Mahindra & Mahindra on Monday launched India's first automatic SUV with a six speed gear box in Pune and Bangalore simulatneously. The automatic variant will cost Rs 85,000 more than the manual Scorpio.

The vehicles will be first sold in the domestic market; later they may be exported depending on the demand and other strategies, said Arun Malhotra, senior vice president, sales and customer care, automotive sector, Mahindra & Mahindra.

Malhotra said that the new edition of the Scorpio is fitted with 2.2 litre mHawk engine. Claiming the vehicle requires low maintenance, he said the transmission is permanently sealed and does not require an oil change throughout its life. The automatic transmission system was developed by an in-house team at Nashik with components sourced from Drivetrain Systems, Australia, said Vivek Nayer, senior VP, marketing, M&M.

The cooling systems, emission, central console and some things in the engine was done out of India.

The automatic option will be available for the VLS and VLX models at Rs 10.21 lakh to Rs 10.75 lakh (ex-showroom price in Pune). The new models will be available across dealerships in the country.

"Traffic in any city is increasing at an alarming rate and driving involves constant gear changes. There is a need felt by customers for this option," Nayer said. This automatic version is also targeted at women who want to drive a SUV but find the existing model heavier.

"NRIs, foreigners and those exposed to this technology globally will also be the target market," he said. In Europe, 50% of the SUVs sold are automatic and the company is hopeful of the Indian market moving in that direction. The company said production of this model will depend on customer demand and that the company has not set any targets.

M&M sells about 3,000 units of Scorpio a month and is growing at 11.2%. There has been an impact of fuel price hike, higher interest rates and excise duty on car sales, but Nayer said the company hopes that this will be temporary and the markets will pick up again during the festive season. There were clsoe to 15 bookings for the automatic variant at the Pune dealership.

parents are children's first line of defense against an array of negative influences. Constant barrages of unsavory images promoting foods of little or no nutritious value are common place. The sky rains with products of expediency but offers little hope for finding products that promote a better state of mind or body. As guardians we do our best to erect shields to block and deflect the poisonous arrows of harmful advertising. The reason we often fail is simply because we underestimate the power advertising wields. Or because we don't really understand how advertising works. Plainly speaking, as adults we find ourselves at times swirling in the bravado of false promises these products spew.

The key to combating this successfully, I believe, is to first know that the word, "advertisement or advertise" is derived from the French word "avertissement" which means warning or caution. I recommend we make this the first response when watching commercials of any kind. If we consistently acted on the side of caution, I'm sure certain foods could be avoided all together.

Second, children are constantly exposed to advertising messages designed to make them believe they can't live without a certain product. Hence the influential power of the medium. But how does it work? Understand that we purchase based on emotions. How we feel about a product determines if we will buy it or not. It all begins with what advertisers have coined as the think-feel-do model of message effects, which presumes that we approach a purchase situation using a sequence of responses. In other words, we think about something, then we form an opinion or attitude about it (feel) and finally we take action and try it or buy it (do). Advertising helps shape our attitude favorably about a product to entice us to buy. A simple process it seems, but so difficult to master as a consumer.

I believe our biggest problem as consumers is that we bypass the thinking part and dive head first into the feel part of decision making. That is always a mistake. Worse, we pass this behavior to our children. In no way am I concluding that all advertising is bad. But once we take to heart that the manipulations of target marketing can increase the likelihood of obesity poor nutrition, eating disorders, cigarette and alcohol use in children and adolescents, then perhaps we will improve our knowledge and acquire tools to use to offset the effects. Unfortunately, there is no way to completely avoid advertising targeted to children, but there are some things you can do to reduce the effects:

1. Limit television and Internet use to no more than two hours a day each.

2. Teach your children how to interpret advertising messages. Explain to older children the purpose of advertising and the mind tricks they use in their messages.

3. Instill values in your children consistently. Help build their sense of self and self esteem so that they understand that material things will not make them better people. Involve your children in extracurricular activities to keep them active and stimulated. Work with your children to make sure they achieve a healthy body image despite what the media culture considers attractive.

4. Lastly, but I will dare say the most important -- practice what you preach. Mr. Douglas Castle, CIOF Director of Strategic Planning, once shared that a parent's credibility is worthless if not followed by consistent action.

The effective way to handle the influence of advertisements is to live the healthy example you wish your children to practice. Build a pattern of behavior that is consistent with what you want for your child. In fact we should be flesh and blood advertisements to our children. Are they not exposed to us more than television? If not, then that is where the true problem lies.

Quantum of Solace is the 22nd James Bond film by EON Productions, due for release in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2008 and in North America on 14 November. The sequel to Casino Royale (2006), it is directed by Marc Forster, and features Daniel Craig's second performance as James Bond. Casino Royale's Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis, and Robert Wade returned as writers, alongside newcomer Joshua Zetumer. In the film, Bond battles Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a member of the Quantum organisation posing as an environmentalist, who intends to stage a coup d'état in Bolivia to take control of its water supply. Bond seeks revenge for the death of Vesper Lynd, and is assisted by Camille (Olga Kurylenko), who also wants to kill Greene. The title was chosen from an unrelated short story in Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only (1960).
Producer Michael G. Wilson created the film's story while Casino Royale was shooting. The film was originally scheduled for a 2 May 2008 release, but it was pushed back to allow more time when Roger Michell dropped out as director. Second unit filming began in August 2007 at Siena and Madrid, before principal photography began in January 2008 at Pinewood Studios. Production designer Dennis Gassner took over from Peter Lamont, who retired after working on eighteen Bond films. Gassner designed the five major Pinewood sets, which stand in for Siena, Bolivia, and the MI6 headquarters. His designs are close to the modernism of Ken Adam, the first Bond production designer. Location filming took place in Panama, Chile, Italy and Austria, before moving back to Pinewood in June. There will be more gadgets than in Casino Royale, though they will still aim to be realistic.

Premise

Beginning almost an hour after Casino Royale, Bond is then involved in a car chase in Siena, Italy. The official synopsis shows that after his capture Mr. White reveals to Bond and M that his organisation, Quantum, has agents in Her Majesty's Government and the Central Intelligence Agency. Forensic evidence of an MI6 traitor leads Bond to Haiti, where he meets Camille, who then helps him find Dominic Greene, a ruthless businessman and chairman of Greene Planet, the legitimate cover for Quantum.

Greene intends to use his government contacts to help overthrow the current regime in Bolivia, and place the exiled General Medrano as the head of state. Medrano will in exchange give him a barren piece of land, which will actually give them total control of the nation's water supply. Bond travels to Austria and South America to unravel Greene's plan, staying one step ahead of the CIA, terrorists, and M whilst trying to keep his desire for retribution over Vesper Lynd's death in check.

Cast

* Daniel Craig as James Bond: Craig said Bond is "still too headstrong and doesn't always make the right decisions". Writer Paul Haggis added Bond will be "a very human and flawed assassin, a man who has to navigate a morally complex and often cynical world while attempting to hold onto his deep beliefs of what is right and wrong". The actor advised Haggis on the script and, as a fan of Marc Forster's films, helped choose him as the director. Craig's physical training for his reprise of the role placed extra effort into running and boxing, to spare him the injuries he sustained on his stunts in the first film. He also practised speedboating and stunt driving. Craig felt Casino Royale was [physically] "a walk in the park" compared to Quantum of Solace. While filming in Pinewood, he suffered a gash to his face, which required eight stitches.

* Mathieu Amalric as Dominic Greene, a leading member of Quantum posing as a businessman working in reforestation and charity funding for environmental science. Craig confirmed "there is a connection" between Greene and Vesper Lynd. Amalric acknowledged taking the role was an easy decision because, "It's impossible to say to your kids that 'I could have been in a Bond film but I refused.'"Amalric wanted to wear make-up for the role, but Forster explained that he wanted Greene not to look grotesque, but to symbolise the hidden evils in society. Amalric revealed Greene "doesn't know how to fight, [so] James Bond would be more surprised. Sometimes anger can be much more dangerous. I'm going to fight like in school." Amalric modelled his performance on "the smile of Tony Blair [and] the craziness of Sarkozy," the latter of whom he called "the worst villain we [the French] have ever had [...] he walks around thinking he's in a Bond film." He later claimed this was not criticism of either politician, but rather an example of how a politician relies on performance instead of a genuine policy to win power. "Sarkozy, is just a better actor than [his presidential opponent] Ségolène Royal – that's all," he explained. Bruno Ganz was also considered for the part.

Marc Forster chose the Atacama Desert to represent Bond's vengefulness in the climax

* Olga Kurylenko as Camille, a Russian-Bolivian agent and the lead Bond girl. She has her own vendetta regarding Greene and Quantum. The producers said Camille is someone "who challenges Bond and helps him come to terms with the emotional consequences of Vesper's betrayal". "At the beginning she is an opponent [of Bond], but they are going to have to collaborate, " the actress further said. "We'll see if she's a villain." Kurylenko spent three weeks training to fight with weapons, and she learnt a form of indoor skydiving known as body flying.Kurylenko dislikes stunts, but overcame her fears because of Craig's friendliness. She was given a DVD box set of the films since the Bond franchise was not easily available to watch where she grew up in Ukraine. The producers had intended to cast a South American actress in the role. Kurylenko trained with a dialect coach to perform with a Spanish accent, which was easy as "I have a good ear, so I can imitate people", and because her accent was not made heavy.

Preparations for the Bregenzer Festspiele's performance of Tosca

* Gemma Arterton as MI6 Agent Fields, who works at the British consulate in Bolivia. Arterton was chosen from around 1500 candidates. One of the casting directors asked her to audition for the role, having seen her portray Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost at the Globe Theatre. Arterton said Fields was "not so frolicsome" as other Bond girls, but is instead "fresh and young, not [...] a femme fatale". Her character is a homage to the '60s Bond girls. Her hair in the film is modelled after Diana Rigg, who played Tracy Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, who is one of her favourite Bond girls along with Honor Blackman.

* Judi Dench as M. She said M's relationship with Bond becomes "pretty prickly".M's husband, who was briefly seen sleeping next to her in Casino Royale, will also be heard off-screen in the film.

* Anatole Taubman as Elvis, Dominic's cousin and second-in-command. He has a bowl cut. His name was chosen by Paul Haggis, which Taubman found cool, but he avoided making Elvis Presley jokes to avoid losing the role. Taubman imagined Elvis once lived on the streets before being inducted into Quantum by Dominic, and he constantly discussed his backstory with Amalric. He called Elvis "a bit of a goofball. He thinks he's all that but he's not really. [...] He's not a comic guy. He definitely takes himself very serious, but maybe by his taking himself too serious he may become friendly."

* Joaquin Cosío as General Medrano, who is Bond's enemy in Latin America. Greene is helping the exiled general get back into power, in return for support of his organisation.

* Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter, Bond's CIA ally who aided him at Casino Royale in Montenegro. This will mark only the second time the same actor has appeared as Leiter twice since David Hedison played the character in Live and Let Die (1973) and Licence to Kill (1989).Early script drafts gave Leiter a larger role, but his screentime has been restricted by on-set rewrites.

* Giancarlo Giannini as René Mathis, a French double agent who helps Bond discover for whom Le Chiffre and Mr. White worked.

* Neil Jackson as Mr. Slate, a henchman who has a fight with Bond.

* Jesper Christensen as Mr. White, whom Bond captured after he stole the money won at Casino Royale in Montenegro.

* Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner, a recurring member of the MI6 staff, later destined to be Chief of Staff.

* Tim Pigott-Smith as the British Foreign Secretary.

* Simon Kassianides as Yusef, who has a confrontation with Bond in Moscow towards the end of the film.

* Stana Katic as Corinne Veneau, an associate of Yusef.

* David Harbour as Gregg Beam, a contact of Felix Leiter who is known to speak directly to 'M' in the film.

* Glenn Foster as Henry Mitchell, rumoured to be an MI6 double agent.

Fernando Guillén Cuervo and Jesús Ochoa have minor roles as the Bolivian Chief of Police and Medrano's Lieutenant Orso respectively. Kiera Chaplin, granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, appears as a receptionist.

Wish you all Happy Vishwakarma Puja

Vishwakarma Puja is an important festival in Eastern India and is dedicated to Vishwa Karma, the divine architect of the architect of the universe according to Hindu Scriptures. Vishwakarma or Visvakarma Puja is celebrated annually on September 17. The festival is mainly celebrated in Bengal, Orissa and Tripura. It is a holiday for the industrial belts in this part of India. Kite flying is a major activity on the day.

In Hindu Mythology, Vishwakarma is the divine architect of the universe. He is also called the divine carpenter and is mentioned in the Rig Veda and is credited with Sthapatya Veda, the science of mechanics and architecture.

Artisans, craftsmen, mechanics, smiths, welders, industrial workers, factory workers and workers of all kind worship Lord Vishwakarma on this day and pray for a better future, safe working conditions and above all success in their respective fields. Workers also pray for the smooth functioning of various machines.

Special statues of Lord Vishwakarma are installed in the workplaces and factories. Nowadays, the statue of Vishwakarma is aptly transformed to match the working place – a factory will depict Vishwakarma like a worker there. Generally, Vishwakarma appears in this mythical image with an elephant, which is his vehicle, and fresh fruits are offered to him. The idol of Vishwakarma at the end of the festival is immersed in water.

In homes, women apply vermilion on all the gadgets and pray for the wellbeing of the family. Those own vehicles clean it thoroughly and apply vermilion on it.

Like in all Hindu festival, there is a special feast on Vishwakarma day. Staff associations arrange cultural programs and all family members participate in the various activities.
