If you think that your computer is not giving that kind of performance that it was giving about six months or a year back when it was new, then might your systems performance has degraded. This does happens with due course of time, with the softwares being installed and un-installed from the computer.
If you are using Windows Xp then this OS does contain some tools that might help you restoring your computers performance. I will be telling you know about these tools.
Just before trying all, do take Backup of your data. At least for the Root directory.

  • Remove Unused Programs : Now this is the most common tip that must be followed to make a good start. As soon as you decide that you wont be using that software anymore, go ahead and uninstall it from Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs. These softwares when unused remains in your computer and lowers its performance. You might need to restart your computer in some cases, do restart and follow the same if you have any other unused programs.
  • Run Disk Cleanup : Removing unused files like Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin and other files with the help of Disk cleanup. You can access it by going into My computer –> Local Drive Properties –> Disk Cleanup. Click this button and it will analyze your computer and show you that which all files can be deleted and how much space can be taken out from it. Click on OK and your files will be removed by the tool. You must run this cleanup at least once in a Month. Also If you are having multiple drives, do perform the same operation on others.
  • Defragment Your Drives : Lets first see that what is fragmented files and Defragmented files.
    Fragmented files would be the one which we can say as scattered. As these files are saved and edited from time to time therefore they get saved onto different sectors of Hard Drive. This makes computer more time to search for it and show the correct page.
    This image will make things more clear.
    Disk Defragmentation
  • Disk Defragmenter collects all the similar files and take them to a single place or sector in a drive, this makes computer in finding the files more easily and more Quickly.
    Disk Defragmentation
    You can run this tool once in six months, also depending on your usage. You can access this tool by going onto Start –> Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Disk Defragmenter.
  • Remove Unused Network Connections : If you have ever made a network with one or more than one computers then you must have realized that it is really easy to share data. Now the problem is that when Windows boots, it patiently waits for the other computer to respond on the network, if not then it keeps on waiting, making you irate, untill it gets a proper answer from the other computer or till the time outs. This makes the system really slow specially during Boot process. Now to disable that, Right click on "My network places" and click "Disconnect Network Drive", it will show you all the drive to disconnect and you can choose from there, which are of no use.
  • Remove Startup Items : When computer Boots, you would be able to see the some icons in the System Tray, these might look to you as shortcuts but they are like Burden on your computer as computer has to start each of these application and thus making it slower. These Startup items can be removed by a called "msconfig". Go to Run –> type msconfig and click Startup tab. In that tab click "Disable all" and the Restart you computer. Now this will make the booting of your computer real fast.
These were some of the tips to restore your computers performance levels. Do try them at your computer and see the difference.

Myth #1: Use screensavers to save power. It would be nice if the “saver” part referred to energy savings: you could look at photos of mountain vistas or cute kittens and feel good about the habitats and animals you’re helping out. Sadly, screensavers were designed to extend the life of monochrome CRT monitors. No one uses those any more, and no one should use screensavers.

Screensavers can actually boost electricity use by preventing computers from entering energy-saving sleep modes. Plus, active monitors generate more heat, making air conditioners work harder. Get rid of your screensavers, no matter how cute the kittens are.

Myth #2: Devices that are turned off don’t use power. Many devices sip power even when they’re not really on. TVs, for example, are always watching for you to click the remote and so constantly draw some electricity. This standby power, also called vampire power or phantom load, is used by any device with a clock, timer or touchpad. And chargers draw power even when their phones or computers aren’t connected to them. According to Natural Resources Canada, standby power accounts for five to 10 per cent of all electricity used in Canadian homes.

At the office or home office, plug all your equipment (PCs, monitors, speakers, scanners and printers) into a power bar and flick the bar’s switch when you’re not working.

Myth #3: Switching off computers is bad for them. It’s a persistent myth that repeated on/off cycles damage computers. However, a study at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory concluded hard drives, for example, are not harmed by frequent shutdowns, and a sustainability paper from the University of British Columbia found computer components are actually harmed most by the heat stress created when a PC is on. The only component worn out by on/off cycles is the actual power switch and “they are typically rated for 40,000 on/off cycles. Over a 10 year period, you would have to turn your computer on and off 11 times a day, 365 days per year to hit 40,000.”

If you’re not using your computer, turn it off.

Myth #4: If I’m not actually working on it, my PC doesn’t use much power. Not true either. According to the Harvard Green Campus Initiative, whether idling or crunching big spreadsheet numbers, computers use about 45 watts for the CPU and 80 watts for a CRT monitor.

Enabling the energy-saving features on newer PCs, however, drops consumption to about 15 watts total.

Myth #5: My one little computer can’t be that big a deal. Also from Harvard comes this eye-opening number: one desktop computer left on all day is responsible for more than 1,500 pounds of atmospheric CO2 over a year.

All of which means, as a minimum, turn off office PCs and peripherals when they’re not in use, and get rid of screensavers. To save even more electricity, slay those vampires with power bars. A power bar at every workstation may cost some money up-front but that investment will come back as long-term savings and the positive feeling that you’ve actually done some good.

parents are children's first line of defense against an array of negative influences. Constant barrages of unsavory images promoting foods of little or no nutritious value are common place. The sky rains with products of expediency but offers little hope for finding products that promote a better state of mind or body. As guardians we do our best to erect shields to block and deflect the poisonous arrows of harmful advertising. The reason we often fail is simply because we underestimate the power advertising wields. Or because we don't really understand how advertising works. Plainly speaking, as adults we find ourselves at times swirling in the bravado of false promises these products spew.

The key to combating this successfully, I believe, is to first know that the word, "advertisement or advertise" is derived from the French word "avertissement" which means warning or caution. I recommend we make this the first response when watching commercials of any kind. If we consistently acted on the side of caution, I'm sure certain foods could be avoided all together.

Second, children are constantly exposed to advertising messages designed to make them believe they can't live without a certain product. Hence the influential power of the medium. But how does it work? Understand that we purchase based on emotions. How we feel about a product determines if we will buy it or not. It all begins with what advertisers have coined as the think-feel-do model of message effects, which presumes that we approach a purchase situation using a sequence of responses. In other words, we think about something, then we form an opinion or attitude about it (feel) and finally we take action and try it or buy it (do). Advertising helps shape our attitude favorably about a product to entice us to buy. A simple process it seems, but so difficult to master as a consumer.

I believe our biggest problem as consumers is that we bypass the thinking part and dive head first into the feel part of decision making. That is always a mistake. Worse, we pass this behavior to our children. In no way am I concluding that all advertising is bad. But once we take to heart that the manipulations of target marketing can increase the likelihood of obesity poor nutrition, eating disorders, cigarette and alcohol use in children and adolescents, then perhaps we will improve our knowledge and acquire tools to use to offset the effects. Unfortunately, there is no way to completely avoid advertising targeted to children, but there are some things you can do to reduce the effects:

1. Limit television and Internet use to no more than two hours a day each.

2. Teach your children how to interpret advertising messages. Explain to older children the purpose of advertising and the mind tricks they use in their messages.

3. Instill values in your children consistently. Help build their sense of self and self esteem so that they understand that material things will not make them better people. Involve your children in extracurricular activities to keep them active and stimulated. Work with your children to make sure they achieve a healthy body image despite what the media culture considers attractive.

4. Lastly, but I will dare say the most important -- practice what you preach. Mr. Douglas Castle, CIOF Director of Strategic Planning, once shared that a parent's credibility is worthless if not followed by consistent action.

The effective way to handle the influence of advertisements is to live the healthy example you wish your children to practice. Build a pattern of behavior that is consistent with what you want for your child. In fact we should be flesh and blood advertisements to our children. Are they not exposed to us more than television? If not, then that is where the true problem lies.

10 Calculation To Know
The value of investments is only as much as their returns. So, it is critical to know how much your money is worth to plan your financial goals

Managing money can involve calculations to understand the worth of an investment. To arrive at a result, calculations can be done in a different way or by using a different formula. Even the same formula can be used differently to arrive at a certain result. Here are a few commonly used money management formulas. Use an excel sheet to do these.
1. Compound Interest
I want to take a loan of Rs 1 lakh to buy a used car. How much will the car cost me at an annual interest rate of 8 per cent for four years?
The compound interest formula can be used here to calculate the final cost, which would include the loan amount and the interest paid. The amount that is actually paid for Rs 1 lakh is Rs 1,36,048.90. The total amount of interest charged for borrowing Rs 1 lakh is Rs 36,048.90.
Formula: Future value = P(1 + R)^N
Type in: =100000(1+8% )^4 and hit enter. P: amount borrowed; R: rate of interest; N: time in years.
Also used for: Calculating the maturity value on lumpsum investment (bank fixed deposits and National Savings Certificate, for example) over a fixed period at a certain rate of interest.
2. Compound Annualised Growth Rate
I had invested Rs 1 lakh in a mutual fund five years back at an NAV of Rs 20. Now the NAV is Rs 70. How should I calculate my returns on an annual basis?
Compound annualised growth rate (CAGR) will be used here to calculate the growth over a period of time. The gain of Rs 50 over five years on the initial NAV of Rs 20 is a simple return of 250 per cent (50/20 * 100). However, it should not be construed as 50 per cent average return over five years.
Formula: CAGR = {[(M/I)^(1/N) ] – 1} * 100
Type in: =(((70/20)^( 1/5))-1)* 100 and hit enter. M: maturity value; I: initial value; N: time in years. CAGR here is 28.47%.
Also used for: Calculating the annualised returns on a lumpsum investment in shares.
3. Internal Rate of Return
I paid Rs 18,572 every year on a moneyback insurance policy bought 20 years back. Every fifth year, I received Rs 40,000 back and Rs 4.5 lakh on maturity. What was my rate of return?
The internal rate of return (IRR) has to be calculated here. It is the interest rate accrued on an investment that has outflows and inflows at the same regular periods.
In the excel page type Rs 18,572 as a negative figure (-18572), as it is an outflow, in the first cell. Paste the same figure till the twentieth cell. Then, as every fifth year has an inflow of Rs 40,000, type in Rs 21,428 (40,000-18,572) in every fifth cell. In the twentieth cell, type in –18572. In the twenty first cell, type in Rs 4,50,000, which is the maturity value of the policy.
Then click on the cell below it and type:  = IRR(A1:A21) and hit enter.
5.28% will show in the cell. This is your internal rate of return.
Also used for: Calculating returns on insurance endowment policies.

4. XIRR
I bought 500 shares on 1 January 2007 at Rs 220, 100 shares on 10 January at Rs 185 and 50 shares at Rs 165 on 18 May 2008. On 21 June 2008, I sold off all the 650 shares at Rs 655. What is the return on my investment?
XIRR is used to determine the IRR when the outflows and inflows are at different periods. Calculation is similar to IRR’s. Transaction date is mentioned on the left of the transaction.
In an excel sheet type out the data from the top most cell as shown here. Outflows figures are in negative and inflows in positive. In the cell below  with the figure 4,25,750, type out
=XIRR (B1:B4,A1:A4) *100
 Hit enter. The cell will show 122.95%, the total return on investment.
Also used for: Calculating MF returns, especially SIP, or that for unit-linked insurance plans.

5. Post-Tax Return
My father wants a bank FD at 10 per cent return for five years. He pays income tax. What will be the returns?
The post-tax return has to be calculated here. The idea is to know the final returns on a fully taxable income. Interest income from the bank is taxed as per your tax slab.
Formula:  ROI – (ROI * TR)=Post-tax return
Type in: =10 – (10 * 30.9%)  and hit enter. You will get 6.91%
ROI: rate of interest; TR: tax rate (depends on tax slab)
Also used for: Calculating post-tax returns of national savings certificates, post-office time deposits, and Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme.
6. Pre-Tax Yield
My brother says that the investment in public provident fund (PPF), which gives 8 per cent, is the best. Isn’t 8 per cent a low rate of return?
An investment’s pre-tax yield tells us if its return is high or low. The return on PPF (8 per cent) is tax-free. Also, this has to compared with returns of a taxable income to estimate its worth. For someone paying a tax of 30.9 per cent, the pre-tax yield in PPF is 11.57 per cent. At present, there is no fixed, safe and assured-return option that has 11.57 per cent return and a post-tax return comparable to PPF’s 8 per cent.
Formula: Pre-tax yield = ROI / (100-TR)*100
Type in: =8/(100-30.9) *100 and hit enter. You will get 11.57%. ROI: rate of interest, TR: tax rate, (depends on tax slab)
Also used for: Calculating the yield on an Employees’ Provident Fund or any other tax-free instrument.
7. Inflation
My family’s monthly expense is Rs 50,000. At an inflation rate of 5 per cent, how much will I need 20 years hence with the same expenses?
The required amount can be calculated using the standard future value formula. Inflation means that over a period of time, you need more money to fund the same expense.
Formula: Required amt.=Present amt. *(1+inflation) ^no. of years
Type in: =50000*(1+5% or .05)^20 and hit enter. You will get Rs 1,32,664 as the answer, which is the required amount.
Also used for: Calculating maturity value on an investment.
8. Purchasing Power
My family’s monthly expense is Rs 50,000. At an inflation rate of 5 per cent, how much will be the purchasing value of that amount after 20 years?
Inflation increases the amount you need to spend to fetch the same article and in a way reduces the purchasing power of the rupee. Here, Rs 50,000 after 20 years at an inflation of 5 per cent will be able to buy goods worth Rs 18,844 only.
Formula: Reduced amt.= Present amt. / (1 + inflation) ^no. of yrs
Type in: =50000/(1+5% )^20 and hit enter. You will get Rs 18,844, which is the reduced amount.
9. Real Rate of Return
My father wants to make a one-year bank FD at 9 per cent. On maturity, he says, the capital will be preserved and he would get assured return on it.
It is true that fixed deposit is safe and gives assured returns. However, after adjusting for inflation, the real rate of return can be negative.
Formula: Real rate of return=[(1+ROR) /(1+i)-1] *100
Type in: =((1+9%)/(1+ 11%)-1)*100 and hit enter. -1.8% is the real rate of return. ROR: Rate of return per annum; i: rate of inflation (11 per cent here).
10. Doubling, Tripling of Money
I can get 12 per cent return on my equity investments. In how many years can I double or even triple my money?
Formula: No. of years to double = 72/expected return
Type in: =72/12 and hit enter. You will get 6 years. For tripling, type in: =114/12 and hit enter. You will get 9.5 years. For quadrupling, type in: =144/12 and hit enter to get 12 years.

Roman Numerals

The numeric system known today as Roman Numerals utilizes only seven symbols, which are added and subtracted to form any number. A superscript bar over a number multiplies it by 1,000, and two vertical lines in addition to the superscript bar multiply a number by 100,000. Thus the common symbols are:
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1,000
= 5,000
= 10,000
= 50,000
= 100,000
= 500,000
= 1,000,000
= 1,000,000
= 10,000,000
= 100,000,000
= 16,000 etc.
= 1,600,000 etc.
There was no symbol for zero
The rule is that when two figures are side by side, if the smaller is on the right, it is added to the larger, and if it is on the left, it is subtracted from the larger. So, VI = 6 and IV = 4. Exceptions to this rule are very rare.
Modern rules have also been added, and are that:
  • No more than three of the same symbol can be repeated in a row, and V and L are never repeated.
  • The smaller number preceeding a larger number cannot be more than two values lower than the other or be one-half of it. This leaves IV, IX, VL, XL, XC, LD, CD, and CM as the normal pairings, so we will most likely see 1999 written as MCMXCIX rather than MIM.

In reality, these rules were never followed by the Romans. To start, they used more than these seven symbols, and M was used only as an abbreviation of mille or milia, not used in combination with other symbols until the 15th century.
